Scientists at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research (SFBR) have for the first time constructed a genetic map of the parasite that causes schistosomiasis, a chronic intestinal infection that can damage internal organs and, in children, impair growth and cognitive development.

Jean Patterson, Ph.D., chair of the department of virology and immunology at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research (SFBR) in San Antonio, will participate as a panelist for the Working Group on Strengthening the Biosecurity of the United States, a U.S. government-sponsored public consultation to be held today and tomorrow in Bethesda, Md.
