SOUTHWEST FOUNDATION FOR BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH

SFBR is where research begins. Since its founding in 1941, SFBR has continued to make major medical achievements that contribute information that helps advance the scientific community's effort to improve health and save lives.
These achievements have come from studying cardiovascular disease; cancer; infectious diseases; new and emerging disease threats such as dengue, SARS and avain flu, and possible bioterror agents like anthrax and Ebola; the role of genetics in human diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, osteporosis, epilepsy, mental illness, and the pregnancy disorder preeclampsia; fetal growth and development; hormonal research; and behavioral medicine.

Infectious Disease

Infectious Disease SFBR has made leaps and bounds in the quest to solve problems associated with infectious and often fatal diseases such as hepatitis, AIDS, and herpes.

Cancer Research

Cancer Research

Major advances in cancer research are just one part of SFBR’s repertoire. Our scientists have discovered new treatments for breast and prostate cancer as well as the potential for new discoveries in the treatment of melanoma.

Heart Disease

Heart Disease

With high cholesterol, obesity, and diabetes rampant in the world today, there’s no wonder that heart disease is such an epidemic. In an attempt to find answers to these concerns, SFBR discovered a link between these factors and our genes.

Neonatal Disease

Neonatal Disease

SFBR developed the premature baboon model to study the many diseases that often plague premature infants, specifically pulmonary and respiratory illness. SFBR scientists found preventive measures to combat these often fatal infections.
