SOUTHWEST FOUNDATION FOR BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH

Grants-in-Aid

This mechanism is designed to meet the needs of scientists wishing to conduct Pilot Studies with SNPRC nonhuman primate resources in order to develop new programs, new models, new techniques, or new technologies that will lead to major NIH-funded grants that support biomedical research with nonhuman primates.

All applications for funding under the SNPRC Pilot Studies Program will undergo competitive peer review.   Reviews address the significance, approach, innovation, and qualifications of the investigator(s) associated with proposed pilot studies.  However, the principal criterion used to evaluate each application is the perceived likelihood that the proposed pilot study will lead to one or more of the following three outcomes:  (1) a successful major grant application to the NIH; (2) significant improvement in the chances of success for a competitive renewal of a research grant; and/or (3) the establishment of new technologies, resources, or tools that will favorably impact the likelihood of funding of several future major research grant proposals that support the mission of the NIH.

The current maximum award is $50,000 per year (direct costs) for up to two years. Common, allowable expenditures include costs of animal purchase and/or access (e.g., user fees), costs of animal handling for data or sample collection; veterinary procedural costs for data or sample collection; costs of reagents and expendables for assays; costs of sample or data processing, retrieval, and/or shipping; fees for services provided by SNPRC Core facilities; travel expenses for pilot study investigators from other institutions to come to the SNPRC.  Over the whole period of the grant, a maximum of $40,000 may be expended at institutions other than the SNPRC only to cover the cost of services that are not available at the SNPRC.

Applications for funding under this mechanism are not currently being accepted.

Potential applicants for support of research in the form of an SNPRC Grant in Aid of Pilot Studies are encouraged to confirm whether anticipated activities and costs are eligible for funding under this mechanism by contacting the Office of the SNPRC Associate Director for Research (Thomas Folks).
