Since
1971, the members of the Southwest Foundation Forum have been
organizing and hosting San Antonio's premier spring formal
fundraiser in support of the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical
Research.
Held on the first Saturday in May at The Argyle, the changing
theme each year attracts approximately 500 attendees who enjoy
mingling during an hour of cocktails, appetizers and gaming.
A silent auction, live musical entertainment, dancing under
the stars and exquisite cuisine dazzle the guests.
In addition, attendance prizes are awarded, raffle tickets
are sold and winners are announced after dinner. In 2003,
a raffle prize included a spectacular trip for two to New
Orleans. This prize provided round-trip airline tickets, hotel
accommodations, dinners at local restaurants, tickets to cultural
centers, luggage and much more. The winners were Albert and
Kathy Biedenharn, who interestingly enough, married in the
exact hotel that donated the accommodations.
With
each passing year, the Gala organizers' efforts and creativity
exceed the expectations of both the organization and guests,
making it the city's most anticipated spring event. In the
summer, the Southwest Foundation Forum presents the event
proceeds to SFBR. In 2006, the Forum proudly bestowed Mr.
John Kerr, SFBR President, with a check in the amount
of $115,000.
Through the years, more than $2 million dollars has been
donated by the Forum to fund pilot studies at SFBR. Since
1999, scientists who have received seed monies from the Forum
have been able to apply for federal grants and to other granting
organizations that have resulted in more than $8 million
dollars for SFBR. Scientists have now been awarded over $20
million dollars in federal grants as a result of the SWFF's
$1 million+ in seed money (a 20-fold return). Clearly, the
impact of the Forum's fundraising efforts through the Gala
is a valuable component in furthering SFBR's life-saving
research.
